Alexis’ Keynote at the Cruise Summit 2019 (Mardid, Spain): The Cruise Sector’s ‘Blue Ocean’ strategy and Implications for Ports

The cruise sector has historically emerged by the crisis in passenger shipping sector during the 70s-80s, forcing the re-invention of passenger shipping to the modern cruise holiday. The cruise sector has been (and is) amongst the early adopters of new technologies, ultimately aiming to ‘sail away’ from price-competitive markets and unattractive business environments (Red Ocean). Over the last years, aside the competitive challenges and regulatory measures affecting the cruise sector, we have also seen an increase in investments in technology and innovation. This is points towards a new ‘Blue Ocean’ cycle for the cruise business… with a number of implications for its stakeholders in general and ports in particular.
